The music department is an integral part of Royal School District. From seasonal concerts to Friday night games, the entire community enjoys the benefits of the music program. This year, Royal School District purchased a piano for the music department. This piano is an Essex Upright by the American piano company Steinway, founded in 1853. The sleek all-black style along with the durability of Steinways makes the piano a great addition to the music department. The piano is housed in the intermediate school music room and is being incorporated into music education. Some special features of this piano include a large music rack spanning the entire length of the piano, a lockable key cover, and an adjustable seat for players of all ages. The district decided to purchase this beautiful piano for a variety of reasons, including the seasonal concerts held in the intermediate school gym and to further music education for students. The piano previously used during concerts was transported from the high school music room to the intermediate school for each concert, which was damaging to the piano. Now, the Essex will be in the intermediate school ready for use. Not only will community members be able to enjoy the remarkable sound of the Essex at concerts, but the piano will also be available to students learning piano, traveling theater groups, talent shows, and other events. According to Royal Intermediate School music teacher Patsy Huddleston, students have already shown immense interest in learning piano and are excited to learn on such a nice piano like the Essex. The first event community members can see the piano in action is the fall concert, on October 30th in the intermediate school gym. The music department is appreciative of the district’s and community’s continuous support, which will allow the music department to flourish.
